The global telecommunication market is in a transitional phase. Telecommunication operators begin to enter this challenging and prospective phase. The decline of the profit made from traditional businesses is becoming a global problem unavoidably, whereas the profit of new growing businesses, such as the broadband business, the new internet business and the multimedia business, is taking more and more market share. Meanwhile, operators are actively expanding their services from the sole broadband application to the package broadband service mode by which they can put multiple services together. Such a mode sets more critical requirements for the business-load capability for carrying networks. Therefore, it is a problem that needs comprehensive consideration to decide how to construct a MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) based on the concept of sustainable development. The IP MAN and the broadband MAN become the core of the telecommunication constriction of China.
In recent years, the MAN business is getting more and more important in the competition of network structure and operation of telecom networks. Following the progress of VOIP and IPTV business, and also the development of the social information construction, the MAN service sets new requirements for basic carrying networks, telecom service networks, information application service networks and operation management networks and etc. The technical progress is extremely active, especially in the fields of VOIP, IPTV, AON, ISAN, “Three Network in One”, “Network Quality Management”, “Integration of Wireless and Wired Services”, “Information Network of an/a Enterprise/Industry/District”.
